South Gloucestershire Council has officially opened a new children’s area at Emersons Green Library this week (25 March).

Around 60 children from Emersons Green Primary School joined library staff and renowned children’s poet and author, Alex Wharton, to formally mark the occasion and see the brand-new facilities on offer.

Alex Wharton hosted a session where he inspired children with his poems and provided tips on writing poetry. He encouraged pupils to explore the new books on offer and emphasised how libraries are a treasure trove of stories and information available for everyone to discover.

Work on the children’s area was completed earlier this month, and the new space is ready to welcome young readers into a vibrant, and resource-rich environment which will serve the community for years to come.

In addition to more space and an extensive selection of around 750 new books, it is equipped with new furniture and two interactive projectors to help make visits even more engaging and enjoyable for children.

The improvements are designed to help develop a love of reading and learning from an early age and build on the success of the activities and school visits already taking place there.

Funding for the project was secured through Section 106 contributions from local housing to accommodate the growing, local community and large number of young families.

Sophia Richards, Library Services Manager at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “We are delighted to open the new children’s area at Emersons Green Library, and I am confident that our young readers will love the new facilities and broad range of books on offer. We look forward to welcoming many more children and families through our doors and encourage everyone to come along and experience the great range of events and activities that run throughout the year. There is lots on offer to inspire and entertain young minds.”

Emersons Green Town Council are excited that this new children’s area will be utilised for activities such as Storytime, Rhymetime and Mini Builders which we have commissioned the library to continue for the community in the new financial year.
