The Town Council recognises that the bike trails on Rodway Common are enjoyed by many members of the community. We understand the positive value that outdoor activities such as mountain biking can bring. However, during a recent inspection of the Common, a newly created trail was identified within the bracken, that crossed a public footpath, and included a large jump directly over the path. Unfortunately, this presented a significant and immediate risk to public safety. The footpath is used by a wide range of people, including dog walkers and families with young children. As a result, the Council had no option but to remove the jump to prevent a potentially serious accident. Work will also be required to ensure that branches, which have been cut, are left in a safe condition and do not adversely affect the long-term health and stability of the trees.
We would ask all trail users to be mindful of other visitors to the Common and to make use of the many existing tracks and areas away from public footpaths when riding. Ensuring a clear separation between bike features and shared pedestrian routes is essential if everyone is to enjoy the space safely.
The Town Council would also like to reassure residents and trail users that we are exploring potential options for official mountain bike trails in the future. While discussions with professional trail design companies are ongoing, any such project is still at a very early stage and there is currently no guarantee that it will proceed. Should opportunities arise, they would be subject to appropriate public consultation, consideration and the necessary approvals. In the meantime, we kindly ask for everyone’s cooperation in helping to keep Rodway Common safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for all users.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
