Oakwood Specialist College , part of Phoenix Learning & Care Group , is proud to announce that one of its dedicated Learner, Harrison, has recently been undertaking a successful work experience placement in grounds maintenance with Emersons Green Council. This hands-on opportunity allowed Harrison to gain invaluable skills while contributing to the upkeep of local parks and public spaces.

As part of Oakwood Specialist College’s commitment to offering diverse learning experiences that support personal growth and vocational development, Harrison was given the chance to work closely with the council’s experienced Environmental Services and Community Management team. His role involved tasks that included maintaining green spaces, caring for gardens, and supporting general outdoor upkeep within the community.

Harrison’s work placement has been an integral part of his learning journey at Oakwood Specialist College, which provides tailored education and vocational training for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities. The college’s curriculum focuses on enabling Learners to develop independence and prepare for future employment opportunities in a supportive environment.

Part of the curriculum intent at Oakwood Specialist College is to enable all Learners to leave with the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to live as independently as possible in adult life. This partnership between Oakwood Specialist College and Emersons Green Council exemplifies the importance of community involvement and real-world experience for Learners.

“We are delighted to see Harrison grow in confidence and develop new skills through this work experience placement,” said Richard Dawson MBA MCMI , the Work Experience Manager of Oakwood Specialist College. “Our goal is to help all Learners unlock their potential, and this partnership with Emerson Green Town Council is a wonderful example of how we can make that happen”

“Oakwood Specialist College would like to thank Paul Kearsley, the Environmental Services Manager and Darryl Bury, the Community Caretaker at Emersons Green Town Council. They have both ensured that Harrison has been engaged throughout the placement. I have no doubt that they have created a very positive memory that will stay with Harrison for a long time and influence his future career choices. We look forward to continuing this collaboration, providing further opportunities for Oakwood Specialist College learners to thrive in real life employment settings within the community”
